Senior Backend Engineer - Agentic Systems
The opportunity
Join an AI-first consultancy and AI-engineering platform that works with leading companies and investors across Europe to turn strategy into real, measurable digital and AI value. Its Forward Deployed AI Engineers (FDEs) embed with clients to ship agentic AI solutions - and you'll build the backend that makes every one of those deployments faster, safer and more reliable.
The role
As a Senior Backend Engineer - Agentic Systems, you'll support the FDE team by building the production backbone that turns agentic workflows into secure, reliable, measurable and reusable customer solutions. You'll own backend services, orchestration patterns, integrations and the evaluation and observability layer behind them.
What you'll do
Build scalable backends: Design and develop backend services, APIs, asynchronous workflows, queues, databases and distributed systems using Python, TypeScript or comparable technologies.
Orchestrate agentic systems: Create robust patterns for tool calling, stateful workflows, routing, retries, human approvals and context management.
Integrate with the enterprise: Build and maintain integrations with enterprise systems and SaaS applications, including OAuth, webhooks, SDKs, API clients and data ingestion pipelines.
Own production reliability: Ensure resilience through solid error handling, idempotent design, rate-limit management, fallbacks, audit logs and effective incident debugging.
Measure what matters: Develop evaluation and observability capabilities - test datasets, trace capture, quality metrics, structured logging, workflow-level dashboards, and cost and latency monitoring.
Accelerate every deployment: Establish shared platform components, templates, security standards and governance patterns that speed up each new FDE deployment while protecting customer data.
What you bring
A degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering or a related field.
4-6 years of experience in backend engineering, platform engineering, distributed systems or comparable roles.
Strong hands-on programming skills in Python, TypeScript or both, and a solid grasp of modern software engineering best practices.
Experience designing and operating scalable APIs, asynchronous systems, queues, databases and distributed services in production.
Familiarity with enterprise integrations, including OAuth, webhooks, REST APIs, SDKs and data ingestion or normalisation pipelines.
Practical experience with LLM or agentic application patterns such as tool calling, orchestration, state management, retrieval, evaluation or observability.
Fluent English and the ability to explain technical topics clearly to engineers, FDEs and client stakeholders.
Nice to have:
Additional local language skills.
