Field / Site CTO
About the Company
An AI transformation firm. They help companies turn AI ambition into working business systems - combining strategic advisory with hands-on and agentic execution, from board-level governance to AI systems deployed in real workflows.
A small team of practitioners augmented by AI agents. Two to three people delivering what a 14-person consulting team used to deliver. Every engagement produces working software and leaves behind reusable IP that makes the next engagement faster.
About the Role
As Field CTO, you'll be the senior technical leader embedded in client environments - the person who turns ambitious AI initiatives into working systems, and who builds the credibility and trust to do it again and again.
This is not a pure advisory role. You'll be hands-on: building, shipping, and demonstrating. You'll own the technical side of customer engagements end-to-end, lead delivery, and be the face of the company's technical capability externally.
You'll also be part of a growing guild of Field CTOs - contributing to shared standards, documentation, and each other's engagements when needed.
What You'll Do
Own the technical delivery of AI transformation engagements for enterprise customers
Lead architecture, implementation, and deployment of AI systems and agentic workflows
Act as the senior technical point of contact for clients - present in demos, stakeholder meetings, and leadership discussions
Hire, grow, and lead small delivery teams around you (5-50 people) as engagements scale
Set and maintain engineering standards, documentation, and delivery quality across engagements
Translate complex technical concepts into clear, compelling narratives for both technical and non-technical audiences
Contribute to the company's reusable IP and methodology after each engagement
Collapse timelines - move at a pace most organisations can't match
What We're Looking For
Non-negotiable
Founder experience - an exit, meaningful funding raised, or significant team growth. You've built something from the ground up.
Strong engineering roots (7-10+ years) - still close to code. Backend, full-stack, or infrastructure background.
Proven leadership - you've built and scaled engineering teams from scratch (5-50 people).
Startup DNA - you've operated in 0→1 or 1→10 environments and thrived in ambiguity.
AI fluency - you understand modern LLM and AI systems, or have shipped AI-driven features in production.
Excellent English and professional presence - comfortable in demos, client meetings, and executive discussions.
High agency, urgency, and ownership - you operate with full autonomy, move fast, and take responsibility for outcomes.
Nice to Have
Experience in AI, voice, SaaS, or agentic systems
Technical pre-sales or customer-facing background
Multi-disciplinary understanding across product, data, infrastructure, and delivery
Strong Signals
Former CTO or Head of Engineering at a startup
Director transitioning from a high-growth mid-size tech company
Hands-on AI/ML background with active practitioner experience
Track record of shipping products and scaling technical teams
This Role Is Probably Not For You If
Your background is primarily pre-sales or solutions engineering with limited engineering depth
You've been an enterprise VP with minimal hands-on coding in recent years
Your experience is predominantly in research, academia, or heavily regulated sectors without a clear product shipping track record
You've moved companies every 1-2 years without a clear narrative
What This Environment Looks Like
High agency. No hand-holding. AI agents handle a large portion of delivery. You'll have access to the founder on every engagement. You'll see how deals are structured, how client relationships evolve, and how strategy becomes execution - fast.
Compensation: above Polish market rates; benchmarked in top quintile of Index Ventures portfolio.
