Senior / Staff Backend Engineer
About the company
Insurance is a $7T global industry built on professional labor: underwriting, claims, pricing, operations, and distribution. We're building AI that can perform that work - professional-grade systems for insurers that read, reason, decide, and act inside real workflows over long time horizons.
We start by augmenting professionals with the tools to succeed at their jobs. That earns us the right to learn from real decisions, capture decision traces, and automate what can be automated successfully over time.
Our products are already in production with leading insurers, driving measurable outcomes and expanding across functions. The opportunity is far broader than any single workflow - we're building the AI operating system for decision-making across insurance.
We're backed by leading investors, and our team brings experience from Facebook, Palantir, Google, Amazon, McKinsey, Mastercard, and Uber.
The role
We're hiring Senior and Staff Backend Engineers into two teams that are our top engineering priority this quarter. You'll join one of them, depending on your background and what you want to build.
Integrations Platform team
A mix of software engineers who own our integration platform (public APIs and control plane) and forward-deployed engineers who embed with clients to build integrations on top of those APIs. The team makes sure every deployment is complete, high-quality, and set up for self-service. You'll help define clear criteria for deployment quality, build processes that raise that standard for every client, and plan and lead refactors wherever the codebase limits extensibility.
Operations Automation team
This team is rethinking our core insurance operations workflow from first principles. You'll architect and deliver an extensible insurance workflow pipeline that automates the back office with best-in-class precision and recall, backed by automation and evals that drive continuous improvement.
Both teams are small, high-ownership, and responsible for some of the company's most business-critical systems.
What you'll do
Platform & APIs - design, build, and evolve public APIs, control-plane services, and the data models behind them
Client deployments - define what a high-quality deployment looks like and build the tooling and processes that get every client there
Workflow automation - architect extensible pipelines that automate complex back-office insurance operations
Evals & quality - build evaluation loops that measure precision and recall and drive continuous improvement
Sustainable architecture - spot where the codebase limits extensibility, then plan and lead the refactor
What you bring
Senior or Staff-level backend engineering experience (8+ years for Staff)
Hustle and grit - excellent at your craft and relentless in pursuing it
Full ownership of your work, driving projects to completion with minimal oversight
Proactive communication - surfacing blockers, asking the right questions, keeping stakeholders in the loop
Comfort with experimentation - testing ideas, measuring results, iterating quickly on problems no one has solved before
Strong fundamentals in system design, debugging, and problem-solving
Python (our main stack), though we're open to strong candidates from other OO backgrounds
Experience with serverless technologies (Lambda, EC2), asynchronous workflows, and cloud environments
Comfort with relational databases, ideally PostgreSQL
Bonus: experience with LLMs/generative AI, distributed systems, public API or integration platforms, or forward-deployed / client-facing engineering
What you'll get
Competitive salary based on experience level
Significant equity options package
Work with an ambitious, smart, global, and fun team transforming a $7T global industry
20 days of PTO a year
Global team offsites
Healthy living/gym stipend, mobile phone bill stipend
Continuing education credits
Location: United States, remote
